A Girl like Me

In my quest to find material to speak to Jamaica's youth, I'm led to various sites or told to google certain things by my friends. I googled this video this afternoon and was both sad and happy about the girls' views. I'm happy that clearly there are some who are growing up w/ self love regardless of the images and stereotypes thrown @ them. I also was saddened that the younger children have not yet been enlightened. There is however, hope. The youngsters who conducted the doll test are now put in a position to erase the stigma attached to colour and teach about the varying shades of beAuty. Hope you enjoyed! Let me know what you think... :)

  1. Damn, even the kids have it twisted. This brings me to supm else, ppl always look at me and my girl weird cause from experience i've learned that because of how i look i'm expected to have a brown skin, skinny girl with long hair. Sad, but thats what i've been told many times over.

  2. That's so crazy! I wonder why. I'm so confused about people's perception of image. I guess b/c your "dark", you should have a light skinned girl so that when it comes time for procreation you can have a "cute baby w/ pretty hair".

  3. Unbelievable!! The sad thing is we perpetuate the cycle of self-hatred w/o the help of outsiders. We as a community have to decide when this is gonna stop. This is tragic ppl...tragic!

  4. Tragic indeed. That's why We have to make whatever changes we can, in terms of what we introduce our children to from the early stages of development. Thanks for coming thru...Much appreciated :)

  5. I just couldn't watch any more after the little girl was asked which doll is the bad doll and then followed by which doll looks like you. It is one of the saddest things I have ever seen. Whatever has to happen to start tuning this out of humans future needs to happen now. I have always thought that I could see before me a shift to one color one people, but I guess we are still so far away. I was hoping the next generations wouldn't have these problems as bad but it looks like its inevitable.

  6. I know, it is sad. The little girl looked sad when she had to choose the "bad" image as her look-a-like. We all just have to work @ educating our kids and spreading self love, cuz that's where it starts. Thanks for coming thru though Jason...miss you guys.
